» National Zoological Gardens of South Africa
The NZG provides a facility for research, training and science advancement. To this end, it manages an animal collection of more than 10 000 specimens and 600 species in four Biodiversity Conservation Centres (BBCs) in Gauteng, Limpopo and North West, covering a total area of almost 8 000 hectares.
» South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO)
SAAO is the National Research Facility for optical and infrared astronomy, with headquarters in Cape Town.

The South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB)'s research scope spans aquatic biodiversity from genes to ecosystems.
» Grants Management and Systems Administration (GMSA)
GMSA implements grant management in partnership with and on behalf of the funding directorates of RISA.
» Knowledge Fields Development (KFD)
The Knowledge Fields Development Directorate facilitates the creation of new knowledge and research capacity within the context of South Africa's research and development challenges and strategic initiatives.
» iThemba LABS (laboratory for accelerator based sciences)
The facility in the Western Cape has been in operation for over 20 years. A total of 278 staff members are employed at iThemba LABS with 38 holding a PhD.
» Applied Research, Innovation and Collaboration (ARIC)
The principle goal of ARIC is to promote and develop applied research within the South African National System of Innovation.
