Call for Proposals
Sabbatical Grants to Complete Doctoral Degrees
The Call opens on 11 December 2012 and closes on 20 February 2013
In 2010 the Department of Science and Technology (DST) introduced the “Improving Academic Qualifications of Academic Staff and Researchers” funding to accelerate the training of doctoral candidates, as a once-off project. This year the DST not only renewed its funding commitment but extend it to a three-year programme. Accordingly, the DST allocated R6 million for the 2012/13, R10 million for the 2013/14 and R10 million for the 2014/15 financial years.
The Call for Proposals will follow a two-pronged approach.
1. The NRF will request DVCs (Research), or equivalent, to nominate staff members of their institutions currently nearing completion of their Doctoral qualification, and for which they will undertake to make ‘sabbatical’ time available. These need to be submitted to the NRF by 30 January 2013.
2. Nominees will need to complete their Curriculum Vitae and application form for this Call online. Application forms must be submitted on the NRF Online Submission System at https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za by nominated candidates who are in the process of completing the research for their doctoral studies and/or preparing a dissertation for examination.
To qualify for this award, nominees must be in the process of completing the research for their doctoral studies and be preparing a thesis for examination. The award will be conditional upon the grantholder submitting a doctoral dissertation for examination and producing at least one scientific publication in an accredited journal within one year following the completion of the sabbatical leave.
Awards of R100 000 for a 6-month period and R200 000 for a 12-month period will be made by March 2013. Recipients of these awards will be selected from the nominations submitted by public universities and research institutions.
