The NRF welcomes Dr Makobetsa Khati who has been appointed Executive Director of the Research Chairs and Centres of Excellence (RCCE) directorate at the National Research Foundation (NRF), taking over from Dr Thandi Mgwebi.
Dr Khati completed the BSc, BSc.Med.Honours and the Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He also completed the MSc and DIC qualifications at Imperial College London, followed by a DPhil at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford, where he held a Wellcome Trust International Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. In addition, he was a Visiting Scientist at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, California, USA.
In 2004, he returned to South Africa as a Wellcome Trust and MRC International Travelling Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine, UCT. Prior to joining the NRF, Dr Khati spent 10 years at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), first as the Research Group Leader (RGL) and later as Competency Area Manager (CAM) & Head of the Emerging Health Technologies Department in the Biosciences Unit. Dr Khati holds an Honorary Associate Professorship in the Department of Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town. Dr Khati has successfully supervised several Masters, Doctoral and Post-Doctoral students.
