The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr Yukiya Amano (front row 5th from the right in the picture) visited South Africa to attend the IRPA (International Radiation Protection Association) Conference in Cape Town. At the special invitation by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Mr Amano had the opportunity to undertake a tour of iThemba LABS facilities on 09 May 2016. During the visit, Mr Amano was treated to a warm reception by the newly appointed Director of iThemba Dr Faiҫal Azaiez (second from the right). Accompanying the IAEA Director during the tour was the CEO of the NRF, Dr Molapo Qhobela (fourth from the right). This high level visit to iThemba LABS by the IAEA Director is seen by the new iThemba LABS Director as a positive signal to solidify the already strong relations between the IAEA and iThemba LABS. After seeing iThemba LABS research infrastructure across various departments, including the accelerator, nuclear physics, isotopes production and the medical radiation departments, the IAEA Director was most impressed with innovations by iThemba LABS to keep equipment up and running for research, radio-isotope production and particle radiotherapy. Training of members of African States in Radiation Medicine was highlighted as a potential focus area to be explored for future collaboration between iThemba LABS and the IAEA.
