The National Research Foundation, in partnership with the Swedish Embassy, cordially invites you to attend this year’s Nobel Inspired lecture in Physics by Professor Petri Väisänen, Director of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) which operates the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). In this lecture, Prof Väisänen, who was part of the international team of scientists that witnessed the discovery of the gravitational waves and the stellar explosion that caused it, will explore what this new find means for the development of Big Science and the future of Multi Messenger Astronomy in South Africa.

Prof Väisänen is an NRF-rated astronomer with extensive experience in different observational and data reduction and analysis methods across multiple wavelength regions and multiple observatories. He is internationally recognized and enjoys membership of many international organisations such as the International Astronomical Union, and the International Society of Optics and Photonics.
