Professor Mmantsae Moche Diale, newly appointed NRF SARChI Chair in Clean and Green Energy at the University of Pretoria, won the Engineering Research Capacity Development Award at the 20th NSTF-South32 Awards held on 28 June 2018.
Prof Diale obtained her BSc (Education) in Physics and Mathematics from North West University and Honours in Physics at Sefako Makgatho University. She completed here MSc with distinction at MEDUNSA and her PhD at thwe University of Pretoria. Before entering into the research field, Prof Diale worked testing electric motors and later became a physical science teacher. She was mentored by Prof David Cahen from the prestigious Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, in materials for photovoltaic research.
Prof Diale is an advocate for clean renewable energy and, through her research Chair, is exploring ways in which to reduce energy costs, particularly for the poor, as well as create new technologies made in South Africa to ensure sustainability.
The NSTF-South32 Awards are the flagship of the National Science and Technology Forum, recognising contributions to science, engineering, technology and innovation across a broad range of fields, showcasing South Africa's research and development capacity. This is the 20th year in which the awards have been run and have honoured more than 200 recipients since their inception in 1998.
