South Africa & Iran enhance science relations between the two countries

On 31 May 2000 the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Iran (MSRT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the objective of enhancing scientific relations between the two countries. With this Agreement, the Parties are currently supporting six (6) research projects in the fields of biotechnology, marine and oceanographic studies. The National Research Foundation (NRF) and the MSRT, are the implementing agencies of this agreement.

The NRF's Knowledge Advancement and Support (KAS) business unit hosted a delegation from Iran on 5-7 June 2018. The purpose of the visit by the group, which consisted of researchers in the areas of Aerospace and Renewable Energy was to discuss joint research collaboration between the two countries, Scientific Facilities’ Tour  as well as the Researchers’ Workshop  which was held at the NRF, Pretoria. The Iran – SA researchers workshop’s objectives were:

  • Establish the scientific collaboration between the Iran and South Africa in the mentioned fields;
  • Institutional visit to explore areas of cooperation and institutional linkages between the two countries; and
  • Deliberate on the thematic areas for the next planned joint call for mobility and research funding between the two countries.
