Prof Loyiso Nongxa elected as Vice-President of the International Mathematical Union (IMU)

Prof Loyiso Nongxa has been elected as a Vice-President of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) during its Annual General Meeting held during 29-30 July in Brazil. The IMU is a prominent global organisation, established in 1920, and a member of the International Science Council (ISC). The ISC was created in 2018 following the merger between the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC).

Obituary: Professor Emeritus Claire Penn

It is with regret that we announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Claire Penn after a long illness.

She was the first A-rated scientist in the Faculty of Humanities at Wits and dedicated a significant portion of her life to the University, having worked at Wits for 44 years.

She held the endowed Chair of Speech Pathology and Audiology and served as the Director of the Health Communication Research Unit in the School of Human and Community Development.

Dr Michael Quayle was recently awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant.

European Research Council (ERC) Grant to Dr Mike Quayle

The NRF and DST congratulate Dr Mike Quayle who has just been awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. Dr Quayle is the fourth ERC award holder from South Africa, following other awards to Dr Carina Schlebusch at Uppsala University, Sweden in 2016, and to Dr Lindsay Bremner, Director of Architectural Research at the University of Westminster, UK in 2015.

Dr Aldo Stroebel, Executive Director Strategic Partnerships at the NRF, is South Africa’s National Contact Point (NCP) for the ERC.
