iThemba LABS Researcher Wins NSTF Award

Professor Malik Maaza, Senior Research Scientists at iThemba LABS, won the NSTF-GreenMatter Award at the 20th NSTF-South32 Awards held on 28 June 2018. The award recognises an individual's or organisation's work towards biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability and a greener economy over the last 5 to 10 years. The award was presented to Prof Maaza by the Minster of Science and Technology, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, who is also the event’s patron.

Dr Albert van Jaarsveld appointed as DG of IIASA

The National Research Foundation (NRF) is pleased to announce that Dr Albert van Jaarsveld has been appointed as the new Director-General and CEO of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria, effective 1 October 2018. Dr van Jaarsveld is currently the Vice-Chancellor and Principle of the University of Kwazulu-Natal, and former CEO of the NRF. He succeeds outgoing Director-General Professor Pavel Kabat who will become the first Chief Scientist of the United Nations’ World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on 1 September 2018.

Proposed institutional reform of the Indian Ocean Rim Academic Group

South Africa is the current Chair for the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) - a regional organisation to foster cooperation among rim countries through voluntary engagement. One of the structures created during the establishment of the IORA is the Indian Ocean Rim Academic Group (IORAG), in acknowledgment of the importance of academia in regional organisations.

On 15 May, the  African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and the Royal Society, with support from the UK’s Global Challenges Research Fund launched the sub-Saharan Africa grant scheme, Future Leaders – African Independent Researchers (FLAIR) Fellowships. The scheme offers postdoctoral fellowships to talented African early career researchers who have the potential to become leaders in their field to enable them to develop an independent research career in a sub-Saharan African institution.
