European Research Council (ERC) Grant to Dr Carina Schlebusch

The NRF and DST congratulate Dr Carina Schlebusch who has just been awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. Dr Schlebusch is the third ERC award holder from South Africa, following another Starting Grant award to Dr Lindsay Bremner, Director of Architectural Research at the University of Westminster, UK in 2015.

Dr Aldo Stroebel, Executive Director Strategic Partnerships at the NRF, is South Africa’s National Contact Point (NCP) for the ERC, appointed by the Department of Science and Technology.

The NRF to host its Annual Awards for Research Excellence in Bloemfontein

The National Research Foundation (NRF) will be hosting its annual NRF Awards in Bloemfontein on Thursday, 14 September 2017. The individuals to be honoured at this year’s ceremony are South African researchers who have obtained A- and P- ratings during the recent NRF rating cycle, as well as recipients of various other awards that recognise individuals for exceptional contributions towards developing human capacity and knowledge generation in South Africa.

Women’s Month Feature: Tshenolo Daumas, SKA SA

In celebration of National Women’s Month 2017, the NRF is paying to tribute to our female researchers at the NRF managed National Research Facilities. We thank the ladies for volunteering to tell us a little about themselves and the work they do.

1. What did you study and where? 

BSc Actuarial and Financial Mathematics at the University of Pretoria; BSc Mathematical Sciences at the University of Johannesburg, and BSc (Hons) Applied Mathematics at Stellenbosch University.

NRF funds state-of-the-art nuclear spectrometer for UWC

Following a intensive and rigorous review process involving international experts, the National Research Foundation has approved the funding of R35 million for a Nuclear Spectrometer. GAMKA, which stands for GAMma-ray spectrometer for Knowledge in Africa and the name, stems from the Khoisan word for “lion.” The new equipment will bolster the country’s ability to perform cutting edge nuclear research.

1. What did you study and where? 

I studied Biology at the University of Florence, Italy, with an MSc in Marine Biology and Ecology. I obtained my PhD in Zoology in 2004 from Rhodes University, South Africa.
