Invitation to tender: design, production and printing

Invitation to comment on MCDM tool
The
NRF is developing a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) tool to assist panel members in 2007 to rank applications submitted to NRF Focus Area Programmes or Capacity Development Programmes for funding in 2008. Prior to implementation, the NRF would like to consult its stakeholders to solicit their input and recommendations regarding the proposed MCDM tool. Read more about this initiative.

Review Reports available online
The following review reports are now available online: NRF Institutional Review, iThemba LABS Review, SAIAB Review and Astro-Geo Facilities Review. Upon acceptance of an evaluation report by the NRF Executive or Reference Group, it is disseminated according to the terms of reference. The NRF is committed to good corporate governance and transparency, hence all evaluation reports, are made available to stakeholders via the NRF website.

SA Research Chairs Initiative gets thumbs up from HEIs
The HEI response to this initiative shows overwhelmingly positive support and it is agreed that the objectives are in keeping with most institutional strategic research plans. The preliminary or pre-proposal phase of the South African Research Chairs Initiative is now underway.

SALT is launched
A little over five years after groundbreaking, South African President Thabo Mbeki officially inaugurated the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in Sutherland today. Dignataries from all partner countries were present to see the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere unveiled. Gathering more than 25 times as much light as any existing African telescope, SALT can detect objects as faint as a candle flame on the moon.

Africa meets to address environment and climate change
An international workshop on environment and climate change focusing on Africa will be held in Nairobi, Kenya from 22 to 24 September 2005. The workshop will bring together global experts on environment and climate change to examine critical environmental issues facing Africa with a view to urgently establishing a network to help the continent cope with the devastating impact of global warming.

Honouring our top researchers
The National Research Foundation's President Awards honoured South Africa's top researchers last night, at a glittering function hosted at the Sammy Marks Convention Centre in Pretoria. This prestigious annual event recognises the commitment and achievements of the local scientific community, emphasising peer recognition and highlighting the international relevance of the NRF's evaluation and rating system. A total of 11 researchers were lauded at this year's dinner.

FIRST LIGHT!! SALT brings the stars to Africa
Exactly five years after groundbreaking, the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) project has released its first colour images, marking the achievement of 'first light' and the successful debut of full operation for SALTICAM, a $600 000 digital camera designed and built for SALT at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO).

Minister launches ICSU Africa Regional Office
The International Council for Science (ICSU) inaugurated its first Regional Office today. Located in Pretoria and hosted by the National Research Foundation, the ICSU Regional Office for Africa will promote the development of all fields of science throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
