EMSU 2002 in Africa, Environmental Management for Sustainable Universities

The Role of Higher Education in Sustainable Development

This international conference, linked to the World Summit on Sustainable Development, will be held from 11 to 13 September 2002 at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.
The event challenges leaders in higher education to report on environmental innovations, research and management practices in an international forum.
The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) will be held in Johannesburg in September 2002. South Africa has been selected to host the Environmental Management for Sustainable Universities 2002 Conference, with Rhodes University as the host institution. This international event will follow on from the WSSD and will create a forum for international academics, students and administrators to deliberate the role of tertiary institutions in contributing to sustainable development.
The EMSU Conference will bring into focus recent international trends towards improved environmental management in tertiary institutions. The Conference will foreground the responsibility of academics to contribute to the sustainability debate at a conceptual level through teaching and research. The conference theme 'The role of higher education in sustainable development' illuminates critical areas for consideration in higher education institutions including:

  • How can curricula and research in Higher Education contribute to contemporary debates on sustainable development?
  • What role do students, academics and administration staff play in these debates and processes?
  • How do academics contribute to sustainable development through relevant research policy contributions and advisory services?

    Contributions
Note that all contributions should link to the conference theme and one or more of the following sub-themes:

  • Implementation of Environmental Management Systems in Higher Education.
  • Development of curricula, programmes and educational processes.
  • Academics and the sustainability debate.
  • Student/staff action for change.

Contributions may have one of the following formats:

  • Paper presentation, or
  • Present a thirty minute critical comment on one of the sub themes.

    Stories and transformation
Present your story of 'The role of higher education in sustainable development' in the form of a paper presentation with a strong case study focus. Share your experience in implementing curriculum, research or management processes for sustainability - your successes and failures, and the significant lessons that may be learnt from your experience.

    Round table discussions
These sessions are aimed at open-ended debate and discussion on a wide range of issues and questions related to the conference theme. Should you wish to host a round table discussion, compile a short orientation to your issue or a question to stimulate further debate or discussion. Issues and questions may be of a practical or theoretical nature.

    Marketplace displays & posters
The conference will include 'market place' and poster sessions to encourage networking. This will be an opportunity to share resource materials, publications, course materials or research reports with other delegates during the Market Place Session. You may also present a poster display.

    Country reports
There will be a plenary session where all participants will be invited to share national perspectives of the role of Higher Education in sustainable development.

    Excursions
The conference will include an excursion to the University of Port Elizabeth campus to observe examples of environmental management, teaching and research in another centre of learning.

For further information or to register, please consult the conference website at:
