Mokhele appointed first president
The first president of the newly-established National Research Foundation (NRF) is Dr Khotso Mokhele (44).
Making the announcement, Prof Mapule Ramashala - chair of the NRF Board - said, “Khotso Mokhele has been the NRF interim president until now. He was involved in the process of establishing the NRF and has a good appreciation of what is involved in taking the organisation forward,” says Ramashala.
Mokhele's appointment as NRF President is with immediate effect. He was formerly president of the Foundation for Research Development (FRD) until the establishment of the NRF in April this year, when the activities of the FRD were incorporated into the new body.
He represents South Africa on the executive board of UNESCO and is a member of the International Scientific Advisory Board that advises the director-general of UNESCO. The NRF president also serves on the Council for Higher Education and the Council of the University of the Northwest.
From 1987 to 1991 he held fellowship research positions in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Philadelphia USA and the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore USA.
Mokhele obtained a BSc in agriculture at the University of Fort Hare (1979), an MSc in food science (1981) and a PhD in microbiology (1986), both at the University of California, USA.
He has received a number of academic scholarships and awards, including the Fulbright-Hays Scholarship and the Ernest Oppenheimer Scholarship. - 5 July 1999
