The NRF in collaboration with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) hosted the 20-year Celebration of their partnership, including collaboration on a joint In-Country Postgraduate Scholarship Programme. The event was held on 1 November 2017 at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and highlighted successes of the partnership since its inception. Through this partnership, the NRF and DAAD have managed to provide sustained financial support, since 2010, to a significant number of young South African researchers and permanent residents to pursue their goals to acquire masters and doctoral degree in any field of study (including university staff members studying towards a doctoral qualification). Over the years this support has significantly increased the quantity (560 scholarships between 2010 and 2016) and quality of masters and PhD production in the country. The event also served as a networking platform for young Master and PhD students to exchange knowledge, research ideas, and learning outcomes. Participants at the event also bid farewell to Ms Philina Wittke (Director of DAAD Office South Africa) and welcomed Dr Anja Hallacker as her successor.
