Following the recent resignation of its CEO, the NRF Board seeks to recruit a replacement candidate who can position the organisation as the premier player in the National System of Innovation. The CEO of the NRF is its chief administrative and executive officer and is accountable to the Board of the NRF of which s/he is a member. The incumbent will represent the Foundation in its dealings with the community of local and international scholars and researchers in higher education, research institutions, government, as well as the private and public sectors. Since the NRF has significant global engagements, it will be necessary for the incumbent to operate effectively in this context.

Description: 

The HartRAO Space Geodesy Programme specialises in determining and maintaining reference points and reference frames. This is done by simultaneous and continuous measurements utilising various techniques (and equipment). HartRAO uses numerous techniques and measurement methods to obtain the reference points – GNSS / GPS reference stations is one such a technique. HartRAO has a network of these GNSS receivers over Southern Africa, as well as receivers on Marion Islands, Gough Island and at Vesleskarvet in Antarctica. We are also currently expanding this GNSS network to eventually consist of at least 20 base stations. These base stations consist of geodetic-quality Leica GNSS receivers.
Requirements of the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) include the specification that inter-technique ties be accurate at the 1 mm level. This is a very stringent requirement and can only be achieved with suitable measuring instruments.
Thus, to improve and maintain the accuracy of all our geodetic reference points and frames to within the newly-required mm-level, we need a system to continuously and automatically measure the relative offsets between the instruments used on-site at HartRAO: The 26 m and 15 m radio dishes, the SLR, LLR and a few reference piers.

Objective: SAIAB requires research vessel Kadouw (a 13m BobCat) to be a fully operational, seaworthy vessel, with a service plan and warrantee on the engines and other new components.

The scope of the work will include:
• Replacement of two Yanmar 6LY2A-STP marine inboard diesel engines
• Replacement of gearboxes with similar (same specification) gearboxes
• Replacement of couplings with similar (same specification) couplings
• Replacement of shafts with similar (same speciation) shafts
• Servicing of all controls

SAIAB reserves the right to opt for refurbishment of the gearboxes and couplings should they be found to be in suitable condition. The costing must however be on a replacement basis.

iThemba LABS, as a national facility of the National Research Foundation, seeks to appoint a service provider to supply, deliver, install, test, commission and handover a new computer numerical control (CNC) machine with a 5–axis vertical machining center, including tooling and training, for the Accelerator and Engineering Department at iThemba LABS, Faure, according to the specifications provided in this BID.

The acquisition of the CNC machine will contribute to our primary objective of developing into a world–class facility by producing components with greater accuracy and speed. It will create an opportunity for collaborations with technical colleges by way of supporting students through scholarships and on-the-job-training and where they then provide us with CNC programming training for internal personnel in return. Similarly, iThemba LABS could offer CNC training and experience to learners. Personnel are up-skilled and become more versatile. Also, the option of commercialization will yield attractive revenue.
