The global change research plan covers four cross-cutting knowledge thrusts, of which two (understanding a changing planet; and reducing the human footprint) are largely covered by existing research programmes and initiatives.
To strengthen research on the other two knowledge challenges (adapting the way we live, and innovation for sustainability) a large scale programme was developed called “the Global Change Society and Sustainability Research Programme”.
Implementation of this research programme started in 2011 with the award of 11 research grants on various topics under the two focus knowledge challenges. Human capacity development is an important and integral component of the funded projects.
