As part of addressing the global change grand challenge the DST and NRF agreed to establish Risk and Vulnerability Assessment Centres in rural-based universities. The Centres are intended to provide risk and vulnerability assessment services to local communities and other potential users of such information, and in so doing, provide knowledge brokering support for effective use of the Risk and Vulnerability Atlas initiated by the DST.
The RVAC centres also present a unique opportunity for the target universities to enhance their research capacity and capability in climate and global environmental change research.
Three RVAC centres have already been established at the Universities of Fort Hare, Venda and Walter Sisulu and two more are in the pipeline.
