The Belmont Forum is a high level group of the world’s major and emerging funders of global environmental change research and international science councils. It aims to accelerate delivery of the international environmental research most urgently needed to remove critical barriers to sustainability by aligning and mobilising international resources. The aims of the Belmont Forum are encapsulated as ‘the Belmont Challenge’, which is “To deliver knowledge needed for action to mitigate and adapt to detrimental environmental change and extreme hazardous events”.
The Belmont Forum has developed collaborative research actions (CRAs) to address the Belmont Challenge priorities (i.e. societally relevant global environmental change challenges); lever Belmont Forum member’s existing investments through international added value; and bring together new partnerships of natural scientists, social scientists, and users.
In April 2012 the Belmont Forum, in collaboration with the G8 Heads of Research Councils (G8HORCs) through an International Opportunities Fund (IOF), launched the first joint call on two priority themes: Coastal vulnerability and Fresh Water Security (www.belmontforum.org/iof). South Africa is party to the call on both themes and South African researchers can establish consortia with researchers from other partner countries and respond to the call.
