Inkaba ye Africa (www.inkaba.org) is a German-South African collaborative multidisciplinary and intercultural Earth Science initiative dovetailing next-generation science and technology with a strong training and capacity-building component that is aligned with the Research and Development (R&D) strategies of both nations. The ultimate goal of Inkaba ye Africa is to ‘examine those natural phenomena which provide fundamental insights into the workings of planet earth, and which impact the socio-economic development of both countries’.

Through this initiative three teams of earth scientists from leading institutes in both countries are taking on the pressing global challenges of climate change, sustainable resources, clean water and energy, all of which are related to the dynamics of Earth Systems. The programme aims to address these issues by seeking an understanding of the complex interactions among the solid earth, the biosphere, the atmosphere and oceans. In so doing much emphasis is placed on educating a new generation of young scientists trained in holistic earth science.

The programme currently comprises of 20 sub projects, each of which includes a stringent capacity building component. The African component of Inkaba ye Africa is managed by the African Earth observation Network based at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. The programme is jointly funded by the DST through the NRF University granting system and by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) - Potsdam.
