!khure Africa (www.!khure.org) is a South African – French flagship scientific cooperation programme in the geosciences. The programme explores the dynamic co-evolution of Earth and Life and their links to tectonics and climate change. It concerns the coupled geo-ecodynamic history of the solid Earth, its fluid envelope and the intervening biosphere, from the early earth to its present state. !Khure Africa integrates researchers from diverse fields within the Earth and Life sciences.
South African scientists participating in the programme are drawn from ten universities/institutions in the country. Like its sister programme, Inkaba ye Africa, and given the strong links between the two, !khure Africa is also coordinated from the South African side through AEON. From the French side, participating scientists from six universities/institutions are coordinated through the ‘Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris’ (IPGP) and University of Paris Diderot. !Khure Africa incorporates a strong Capacity Building program, facilitated through visits and exchanges, especially to enhance analytical skills of South African graduate students in France, and collaboration to construct new laboratories in South Africa.
The programme was initially funded through the ARCUS programme, with equal funds from ‘Région Ile de France’ and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is has also received strong support from the French national Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and it is now an integral part of the International Research Group (GDRI) of CNRS.
