The Human Capacity Programme (HCP) comprises the Student and Postdoctoral Support Programme and the Internship Programme.
Student and Postdoctoral Support Programme
The Student and Postdoctoral Support Programme (SPS) supports Honours, Masters, and Doctoral students and postdoctoral research fellows through a range of funding streams that include: the NRF Freestanding Scholarships; Innovation Bursary Scheme; Scarce Skills Development Fund; Space, Science and Technology; National Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics; Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowship; NRF Postdoctoral Fellowship; and the Research Professional Development Programme for researchers based at Science Councils and National Facilities.
In addition, there are strategic projects managed under SPS which include the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), the French-South African Institute of Technology (F’SATI) programme at Tshwane University of Technology and the Cape Peninsular University of Technology; the ESKOM-NRF Black Researchers/Academics Development (BRAD) programme at eight higher education institutions; and the Masters in Accelerator and Nuclear Sciences and Material Sciences (MANuS MatSci) programme at iThemba LABS, University of the Western Cape and the University of Zululand.
Internship Programme
The DST-NRF Internship programme provides an opportunity for skills training opportunities to unemployed graduates. The following internship sub-programmes are managed and co-ordinated within the HCP.
- Internship in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) and in Research and Development (R&D).
- Internship in research management, in partnership with the South African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA).
- Internship in Research Innovation Management Systems (RIMS).
