ABSTRACT: Part of several studies, the aim of which was to collect information on intergroups relations. A joint investigation by the Institute for Sociological, Demographic and Criminological Research of the HSRC and the Committee for Research on Intergroup Relations.

DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES: age, gender, language, education, occupation, marital status, income

IMPORTANT VARIABLES: political and economic situation, the constitution, race relations, group areas and media use. White questionnaire also includes government's record in handling national affairs, opinions toward opening listed amenities to all races, attitudes towards immigrants and the immigration policy in general

UNIVERSE: All White, Coloured and Indian South African adults in urban areas.

METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION: Face to face interview with a structured questionnaire. Adapted white, coloured and Indian co-workers' panels of the Opinion Survey Centre of the HSRC were used.

SAMPLING DESIGN: The samples were drawn country wide but did not include non-urban areas (farms and small holdings). A procedure of cluster sampling in randomly selected statistical regions, magisterial districts and enumerator subdistricts was used.

NOTES: Contains some open-ended questions that are not documented. Available information indicates that an AD HOC sample of Black people was included. There is no indication of what records are from the Black population except that the Coloured questionnaire includes 280 and Indian 287 responses under the population group variable that were coded 0, otherwise unidentified.
