International Research Grants (IRG)
International Research Grants (IRG) aims to forge and maintain strategic and intellectual alliances between individuals, institutions and organisations in the science research communities nationally and internationally to support the international competitiveness of the country.
Call for proposals: US National Science Foundation / National Research Foundation Materials World Network The Materials World Network is an initiative of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) aimed at promoting international collaboration in the field of materials science research and education. This year sees the second opportunity for South African
researchers to participate in the programme through the administrative means offered by
the National Research Foundation. The deadline for submissions is 11 November 2009.

Call for expressions of interest : South Africa / Namibia Joint Science and Technology Research Programme The South African Department of Science and Technology (DST), having recently initiated bilateral S&T relations with Namibia, are currently in the process of defining an operational and funding strategy in relation to these two countries. In order to gauge the state of existing collaboration between South African researchers and their Namibian counterparts, as well as to determine the possible uptake of funding to be made available for future collaboration in this regard, the DST has requested the National Research Foundation (NRF) to issue the current Call for Expressions of Interest in joint research between the South African researcher community and their colleagues in their respective countries. As a result, we hereby invite all interested and qualifying parties to complete the short form accompanying this call and to submit it to the NRF by the date indicated below. Applications shall be submitted to the relevant authorities in both countries, the Ministry of Education in Namibia and the National Research Foundation in South Africa. Closing date for application is 31 October 2009.

About International Research Grants (IRG) section
A free flow of ideas and information is vital to the process of scientific enquiry, and in turn, to our ability to address economic, environmental and social development issues both nationally and globally. Science crosses international boundaries to provide strong, positive connections between individual scientists, institutions and nations. Such exchanges contribute to the expansion of the global knowledge base to which we are linked.
It is in our national interest to participate in international scientific activities when one considers the relatively low level of spending on research and development (R&D) in the country. Furthermore, internationally the escalating cost of R&D forces countries to use scarce resources and institutional infrastructure effectively. International collaboration maximises these outputs.
International cooperation in creates tremendous potential for scientists from the previously disadvantaged communities and historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs) to get involved in collaborative research programmes. Researchers at HDIs can develop the research capacity within their institutions to assist in developing the necessary human resources to address the socio-economic needs of the country.
The objectives of International Science Liaison are to:
- Make contact and remain in contact with the International Council for Science (ICSU) and other similar bodies to facilitate South African participation in relevant and important international scientific activities.
- Enter into and service bilateral agreements aimed at accessing expertise not available locally in order to strengthen the research base in South Africa.
- Facilitate international linkages to strengthen the research base in South Africa to ensure the socio-economic development of the country.
- Through the Africa Interaction Programme expand scientific cooperation between scientists in South Africa and their counterparts in the rest of Africa.
- Enhance the skills and capabilities in scientific research in the country through targeted international linkages and to access funding for such collaborative research programmes.
