    The purpose of the grants available within this portfolio of opportunities is:

    • to enable researchers to interact and build strong ongoing collaborations with their international counterparts;
    • in so doing to build South African research capacity by enhancing existing and developing new collaborations;
    • to facilitate the exposure of local researchers to top international expertise;
    • to build and develop networks;
    • to strengthen the international research experience for young researchers;
    • to assist in the arrangement of high level scientific events; and
    • to facilitate multi-use of research equipment and the training of individuals in the use of sophisticated research equipment.

    NRF support for "Knowledge interchange and collaboration" can be divided into two primary clusters:

    • Travel Grants:
      These grants are intended to assist researchers to travel (primarily internationally) and to bring in foreign visitors - in order to foster the exchange of information, collaboration and optimum use of facilities and opportunities. Within the Travel Grants cluster, the following mechanisms of support exist:
      • NRF Grant-linked Travel Grants
      • Block Grants
      • Free Standing Travel Grants
      • Directed Travel Grants.

    • Scientific Events:
      These grants are intended to provide support for the organisation of conferences, workshops and training courses.
