NRF Helping in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS continues to be a major global public health issue, having claimed more than 35 million lives so far. An estimated 36.7 million people were living with the disease by end of 2016. (World Health Organisation)

South Africa has the biggest and most high profile HIV epidemic in the world, with an estimated 7.1 million people living with HIV in 2016 (WHO).  This translates to a disproportionate 19% of the global burden of the HIV epidemic for a country that is home to only 1% of the global population. 

Collective action needed to achieve food security and nutrition for all

In commemoration of World Food Day, Professor Julian May, director of the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security (CoE-FS) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), reflects on the progress that the Centre has made so far in understanding the nature of the problem of food security, and how it could be addressed in South Africa.

SARChIs and CoEs recognised at NSTF Awards

On 29 June 2017, the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) held their annual award ceremony. One DST-NRF Centres of Excellence (CoE) director; two South African Research Chair (SARChI) holders; and one Centre of Excellence were recognised for their contributions in their respective fields.
