On 26 October in Taipei, a merger of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC) forged a new organisation, with an overwhelming majority of members from each of the organisations voting in favour of the merger.

The NRF is the member organisation to both the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social sciences Council (ISSC). Two respective General Assemblies are currently convened in Taipei regarding the future relationship between ICSU and the ISSC, following the recommendation of its Executive Boards to merge the two organisations.
Prof Cheryl de le Rey, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria, has been elected to the Executive Board of ICSU.
Prof Daya Reddy of South Africa is the new President-elect of the International Council for Science (ICSU). During the ICSU General Assembly held in Auckland, New Zealand (31 Aug – 3 Sept), Prof Reddy’s elec tion was widely supported, voted for competitively by more than 30 ICSU Unions and a large number of member countries.
