The Research, Innovation, Impact Support and Advancement (RIISA) is a multi-disciplinary funding division of the NRF that supports, promote, and advance the creation of knowledge and innovation, through research funding, human capacity development funding, and research infrastructure funding.

Grants Management & Systems Administration (GMSA)

The purpose of the Grants Management & Systems Administration (GMSA) directorate is to implement management of grants on behalf of the funding directorates of the Research, Innovation, Impact Support and Advancement (RIISA) business unit of the NRF.

Human and Infrastructure Capacity Development (HICD)

The aim of the Human and Infrastructure Capacity Development (HICD) Directorate is to develop institutional research capabilities and infrastructure in parallel with the appropriate human capital to drive the research and development strategies within the National System of Innovation (NSI).

Knowledge Advancement & Support (KAS)

The Knowledge Advancement & Support (KAS) directorate contributes to the promotion and support of research by facilitating the advancement of the frontiers of existing and development of new fields of knowledge, and the necessary associated research capacity in the context of national research, developmental challenges and strategic initiatives

Reviews and Evaluation (RE)

The Reviews and Evaluation (RE) directorate enhances the contribution of the NRF as a strategic partner in knowledge production, human capital development and infrastructure provision.

Research Chairs and Centres of Excellence (RCCE)

The Research Chairs and Centres of Excellence (RCCE) Directorate brings together two strategic investments of the South African government, namely, the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) and the Centres of Excellence (CoEs).
