Professor Gary Maartens

Gary Maartens is an emeritus professor and senior research scholar at the University of Cape Town. He is a clinician-researcher and an international authority on the therapeutic aspects of HIV-associated TB, drug-resistant TB, and antiretroviral therapy in resource-limited settings.

He contributed to international guideline development for the management of drug-resistant TB and HIV-TB co-treatment for the World Health Organization, and prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections in HIV for the joint guidelines from the Centres for Disease Control (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). One of the studies he led for trials of INH preventive therapy in HIV was a first for people on antiretroviral therapy, and this was included in the national guidelines.

In 2015, he received the gold award for outstanding contributions to medical research from the South African Medical Research Council.

In 2022, he was appointed editor-in-chief of Southern African Journal of HIV Medicine.

His research outputs over the last eight years include 166 peer-reviewed journal articles and five book chapters. During this time, he supervised 10 Master’s and 16 PhD students to graduation.
