Professor James Raftery

Department of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, University of Pretoria

Professor James Raftery’s current research looks at the algebra of logic, including both the concrete and the abstract aspects. His work has covered various areas including residuated structures, as well as the application of universal algebraic methods to the general theory of deductive systems.

He obtained his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Natal (now UKZN) and was appointed to the Mathematics Department of the University in 1986 where he became a professor in 2002. In 2013 he accepted a professorship at the University of Pretoria.

He serves on the editorial board of Algebra Universalis and is an associate editor of Quaestiones Mathematicae.

He has supervised ten successful postgraduate dissertations (five at PhD level) and one postdoctoral Fellowship.

He serves on the Steering Committees of the international conference series Topology, Algebra and Categories in Logic, as well as the series Logic, Algebra and Truth Degrees. He has served as co-Chair of the Association for Symbolic Logic’s Committee for Logic in Africa.

His work has achieved considerable recognition: he won the University of Natal Vice-Chancellor’s Research Award for young researchers as well as the South African Mathematical Society’s Award for Research Distinction. He has held an NRF A-rating since 2019.
