Professor Josua Meyer

Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, Stellenbosch University

The thermal sciences is the main area of Professor Josua Meyer’s research, focusing on heat exchangers. His work looks at internal forced convection, the transitional flow regime, nanofluids, boiling, and condensation for applications in areas such as thermal solar, wind and nuclear energy.

Prof Meyer obtained his PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Pretoria where he subsequently spent almost 20 years as Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. He then took up the position of professor at Stellenbosch University in 2022 to focus on research. He also spent time in the private sector as well as academia, including North-West University and the University of Johannesburg.

He has maintained a prodigious output of papers, with more than 480 appearing in peer-reviewed journals such as Renewable Energy, Applied Nanosciences, and the International Journal of Thermophysics. He has also authored/co-authored three books and two book chapters. He served as a reviewer and editor for various publications including, among others, Applied Thermal Engineering and International Journal for Numerical Methods in Heat and Fluid Flow. He has also supervised more than 170 students.

He is a five time winner of UP’s Exceptional Achiever Award and also won the Thomas Price Award, Rand Coal Award and the Will Stoecker Award, among many other accolades.
