Professor Philip Hallinger

Professor Philip Hallinger is internationally recognised as an innovator in school leadership and leadership development. His research focuses on principal instructional leadership, problem-based learning, simulation-based learning, sustainable leadership, and international studies in educational leadership and management.

The aim of his work has been to unpack the means through which school leaders influence teachers and impact student learning. His research is also notable for its use of cutting-edge quantitative and mixed methods to study how culture shapes the enactment of leadership.

Currently, he is a distinguished visiting professor of educational leadership at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and a global talent professor of management at Mahidol University, Thailand.

In 2008, he assumed the Joseph Lau Chair Professorship at the Education University of Hong Kong, where he launched the Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change. Over the next 15 years, this developed into one of the world’s most influential school leadership research centres. During this time, he initiated the Asia Leadership Roundtable that brought together regional and international scholars to enhance regional research networks, capacity, and publication opportunities.

His international research awards includes the Roald F. Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award for distinguished contributions to the field of educational leadership and management. His research output over the last eight years include over 120 peer-reviewed journal articles, six books, and 10 book chapters.
