Ecologist David Richardson’s career has been devoted to the study of biological invasions with a focus on plants, especially trees and shrubs. He has also made substantial contributions to the theoretical foundations of invasion science.

He was Director of the DSTI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Invasion Biology between 2011 and 2022 and is currently professor in the Department of Botany and Zoology at Stellenbosch University.

Among his most important contributions to ecology has been the development of new model systems for the elucidation of the diverse perspectives that need to be considered to understand and manage invasive species. His contributions to the ecology of pines and Australian wattles are recognised as foundation studies in invasion science.

He has received numerous awards, including the 2018 Kwame Nkrumah Continental Award for Scientific Excellence from the African Union. He has been on Clarivate’s list of “Highly Cited Researchers” since 2014 and has occupied the #1 position on Research.com’s list of “Top Ecology and Evolution Scientists in South Africa” since 2022.
