Professor Harald Winkler

Professor Harald Winkler’s research interests are about the connections between development, climate change and social justice. His work focuses on climate change mitigation in the context of poverty and inequality, equity and inequality, just transitions, and the implications of global climate processes for national development strategies.

He has published extensively, with an h-index of 32 on Scopus. He was joint Editor-in-Chief of the international journal, Climate Policy, and serves on six editorial boards.
Prof Winkler has contributed to assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for over two decades, with a particular focus on climate mitigation, sustainable development pathways, and international climate agreements.

He led research on Long-Term Mitigation Scenarios for South Africa, informing national climate policy. He has been a scientific advisor the SA’s delegation to the UNFCCC, and was one of two co-facilitators of the technical dialogue of the first Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement.

Prof Winkler is a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences; a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa; and of the World Academy of Sciences.
