Professor Ralf Henkel

Professor Ralf Henkel is a leading authority in the field of reproductive biology, particularly male reproductive health. His research has covered numerous areas including the bioactive compounds found in medicinal plants in South Africa, oxidative stress, and sperm DNA.

Prof Henkel completed his PhD in zoology at Philipps-Universität in Marburg, Germany, and obtained his Habilitation (scientific thesis and examination in Germany to become a professor) in reproductive biology at the Justus-Liebig University in Giessen, Germany. He has worked as a senior professor and Head of Department at the University of the Western Cape’s Department of Medical Bioscience and held professorships at the University of Giessen and Jena University in Germany, and holds an Honorary professorship at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru. He is currently chief scientific advisor at LogixX Pharma, Theale, United Kingdom, and extraordinary professor at UWC.

He has authored/co-authored more than 270 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 60 book chapters and five books, and supervised 33 PhD, 25 MSc and 19 Honours students over the course of his career. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Andrologia and reviewed for a variety of journals such as Human Reproduction and Fertility and Sterility.

His work has garnered numerous awards.
