Dr Daniel Hart

A lecturer at the University of Pretoria’s Department of Zoology and Entomology, Dr Daniel’s research focuses on the evolutionary biology of mammals to better understand animal and human evolution; explore medical treatments for age-related and hypoxemia-related disease, cancer, pain sensitivity and reproductive health; and predict future consequences of climate change. He uses the African mole rats as his primary research model.

He completed his Honours, MSc and PhD in Zoology at UP and spent time as a guest researcher at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia and as a research associate at Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania. In addition to his current position, he also holds a Fellowship of the Africa Science Leadership Programme at Future Africa.

He has published 58 peer-reviewed articles since 2017 in journals such as Science, Nature Aging, Nature Communications and Trends in Ecology & Evolution. He is also a permanent review editor for Frontiers in Mammal Science and a guest editor for Frontiers in Endocrinology.

He has supervised 33 postgraduate students—18 Honours, 11 MSc and four PhDs.

He was recently awarded the NSTF’s TW Kambule Award for Emerging Researchers.
