Mathematical Sciences Dr Jesse Heyninck Department of Computer Science, University of Cape Town In the field of artificial intelligence (AI), the focus of Dr Jesse Heyninck’s research has been on knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR), a sub-field of AI that seeks to represent knowledge declaratively so that a machine can use it to reason and solve complex tasks. Dr Heyninck considers KRR as necessary in AI to ensure explainability, transparency and efficiency.Dr Heyninck obtained his PhD in philosophy at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany and has held various positions at institutions such as Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal; TU Dortmund, Germany; VU Brussels, Belgium, University of Cape Town; and Open Universiteit, the Netherlands where he is currently an assistant professor. He is also an honorary research associate at UCT where he is a member of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence, the DSTI’s flagship AI programme. His articles have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Artificial Intelligence, and Journal of Approximate Reasoning. He has chaired the KRR track at SACAIR, SA’s premier AI conference and has given more than 60 scientific talks at conferences and workshops, including top tier conferences such as the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, and the AAAI conference.
