Dr Itumeleng Monageng

Department of Astronomy, University of Cape Town

Dr Itumeleng Monageng is an expert in high mass x-ray binaries (HMXBs), particularly the Be/X-ray and gamma ray binary subclasses. His research extends to the field of astrophysical transients and involves the emerging field of multi-messenger astronomy, particularly through the detection of highly energetic transient events emitting gravitational waves. His work has utilised world leading astronomical facilities such as GAIA, eROSITA, Einstein Probe, SALT, and MeerKAT, as well as the Vera Rubin Observatory, of which he is a South African Junior Affiliate.

He currently is a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town, a joint position with the South African Astronomical Observatory (NRF-SAAO). He has co-authored more than 40 articles in publications such as the Astrophysical Journal; Astronomy & Astrophysics; and Nature, eight of them as lead author. He engages in science outreach with NRF-SAAO and has a regular slot on a local Setswana radio station where he popularises astronomy and physics. He has also co-supervised six postgraduate students to date.

His work has garnered recognition over the course of his career and has included selection as one of the Top 20 Young Scientists for the prestigious 69th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and the College of Fellows Young Researcher Award.
