Health Sciences Professor Lebo Gafane-MatemaneHypertension in Africa Research Team, North-West University Prof Lebo Gafane-Matemane is an Associate Professor of Physiology at North-West University’s Hypertension in Africa Research Team (HART). Her research focuses on kidney function, hypertension, and related cardiovascular risk factors, particularly in populations of African ancestry. She leads HART’s Translational and Implementation Science sub-theme and is the unit’s community engagement champion.She completed her BSc and Honours in physiology at the University of Limpopo and her Master’s and PhD in cardiovascular physiology at NWU. She has published over 50 manuscripts and was recently invited by the Journal of Human Hypertension to publish a comprehensive review of hypertension in Africa and also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Hypertension, Journal of the American Heart Association, and Comprehensive Physiology.She is a member of the board of directors of the Southern African Society of Hypertension and Childhood Hypertension Consortium of Africa and is the Secretary of the Physiology Society of Southern Africa. Internationally, she chairs the Mentorship and Training Committee of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH).Her accolades include the South African Medical Research Council Bronze Scientific Merit Award and the selection as a Fellow of the ISH and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science HOPE Fellow, among others.
