Ms Zurika Murray

Department of Genetics. University of the Free State

Ms Zurika Murray is a researcher in Behavioural Genetics with a special interest in the genetics and genomics of neurotransmitter systems that contribute to variation in human behaviour. She is currently pursuing a multidisciplinary PhD investigating changes in the expression of genes involved in monoamine neurotransmitter systems following exposure to synthetic and naturally occurring indole alkaloids, using cerebral organoids derived from human-induced pluripotent stem cells. Her research explores the potential of these compounds as alternative treatment options for specific mental health conditions. Since joining the Department of Genetics in 2009, Ms Murray has established the discipline of Behavioural Genetics within the department, generating interest among current and prospective students from diverse backgrounds. To date, she has successfully supervised five MSc students as a main supervisor, co-supervised three MSc students, and supervised more than 60 BSc Honours students.

Ms Murray is passionate about research mentorship and promoting positive academic collaboration in multidisciplinary research.
