Tim Forssman is an Associate Professor in Culture and Heritage Studies and Archaeology at the University of Mpumalanga. He specialises in the archaeology of southern Africa’s late Holocene, focusing on the relationships between forager and farmer communities and the emergence of regional political formations.

Prof Forssman has demonstrated exceptional leadership and innovation in public engagement through his ability to translate archaeological research and heritage science into accessible, meaningful, and transformative public experiences. His work has significantly enhanced public understanding of science, archaeology, and cultural heritage through sustained engagement with schools, communities, universities, conservation areas, policymakers, and the broader public.

A flagship achievement is the Travelling Museum initiative, which has transformed access to archaeological heritage and public understanding of science. By taking interactive heritage and science experiences directly to communities, schools, universities, and conservation areas, the initiative successfully removes traditional barriers to museum access and creates opportunities for diverse audiences to engage with scientific research and Africa’s rich archaeological heritage. Through this innovative model, Prof Forssman has expanded the reach of heritage education, fostered public curiosity and scientific literacy, and promoted inclusive participation in knowledge sharing.

His public engagement activities have successfully translated complex scientific findings into engaging narratives that resonate with diverse audiences, strengthening the connection between science and society. Through educational outreach, science communication, heritage promotion, and stakeholder engagement, he has contributed to a deeper appreciation of South Africa’s archaeological record and its relevance to contemporary society. Between 2009 and 2025, Prof Forssman produced 55 research outputs, including 51 peer-reviewed articles and chapters, and four books. He is also a permit holder for archaeological research at Thulamela, one of South Africa’s most important archaeological sites.

His book Archaeology in Africa: Why the past matters was published in 2026, and will be followed in 2027 by Ivory, Gold and Power: Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean World, c. 600 BC to AD 1900.
