A Secret Weapon Against Obesity: Avocado Seeds?

Avocado seeds are usually thrown away, but they are full of powerful plant chemicals that can help protect health. The seed has even more antioxidants than the avocado fruit itself. Scientists have wondered if these seeds could help stop or reduce obesity, a major global health problem that can cause serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Many people are looking for natural ways, such as using plants, to help fight obesity.

A research study funded by the NRF investigated if avocado seed powder can help prevent obesity caused by eating a high-fat diet. Scientists used 16 male Sprague Dawley rats for the study because rats have body systems that are very similar to humans. Their metabolism (how they process food and fat) is similar to ours, making them ideal models for obesity study.

All the rats were fed a high-fat diet for 10 weeks to make them obese. After that, the rats were divided into two groups:

  1. Control Group: 8 rats kept eating the high-fat diet.
  2. Treatment Group: 8 rats ate a high-fat diet mixed with avocado seed powder

The avocado seeds were dried, ground into powder, and added to the food pellets. Molasses and palm stearin were also used to make the pellets sticky and to raise the fat content. The rats lived alone in cages in a room with steady temperature and lighting and had free access to food and water. Their weight was measured weekly for six weeks, and their food intake was tracked.

After six weeks, the rats were put to sleep using anaesthesia. After their death was confirmed, scientists collected their blood and organs (heart, liver, kidneys, brain, and fat tissue) and tested the blood for cholesterol, triglycerides, and liver health. Some organs were studied under a microscope to check for any hidden damage. The food pellets were also tested to determine their protein, fat, fibre, moisture, and mineral content. The researchers also used a special machine (LC-MS) to check what healthy plant chemicals were inside the avocado seeds.

The research findings show that:

  • Rats that ate the avocado seed powder gained much less weight (7.8g) compared to rats that didn’t (33.9g).
  • They had lower body fat (adipose tissue) and healthier blood fat levels (lower triglycerides).
  • Their heart, liver, and kidney health stayed normal.
  • The avocado seed powder was rich in healthy chemicals such as ferulic acid, cinnamic acid, and flavone, which help fight fat buildup and inflammation.

The results showed that avocado seed powder helped stop weight gain and lowered harmful fats in the blood. Plant chemicals in the seed may help block fat storage and improve how the body burns fat. Some minor changes in liver enzymes were found, so more research is needed to be sure it’s completely safe. Avocado seed powder has the potential to become a powerful natural way to help prevent obesity. However, more studies are needed, especially in humans. This research offers hope in the fight against obesity while also reducing food waste!
