Professor Weideman’s research in applied mathematics focuses on a number of areas including numerical complex singularity detection and classification; computational contour integral methods as well as the computation of special functions such as the Faddeeva function and the development of his software suite for spectral collocation methods, called DMSUITE. He studied Applied Mathematics at the University of the Free State and spent a year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Visiting Scholar before returning to UFS as a Senior Lecturer. He also worked as an Associate Professor at Oregon State University and as Visiting Professor at the University of Utah. He is currently a Distinguished Professor at Stellenbosch University. He has published more than 50 papers in journals such as the SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis and SIAM Review and serves as Associate Editor of the Electronic Journal of Numerical Analysis and of Numerical Algorithms. He is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and won the Research Distinction Medal from the SA Mathematical Society and the Chancellor’s Award for Research from SU.
