1st A-Rating Professor Frederick Johan Raal Department of MedicineUniversity of the Witwatersrand Professor Frederick Johan Raal is a leading expert on familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH). Currently, he is Professor and Head of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism as well as the Director of the Carbohydrate and Lipid Metabolism Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand. Prof Raal completed his Master of Medicine in Health Sciences as well as his PhD in Lipidology at WITS. He is a founding member of the Lipid and Atherosclerosis Society of Southern Africa; part of the working group for the first South African Lipid Guidelines (2000); and a main member of the Committee which produced revised guidelines including our current South African Dyslipidaemia Guideline Consensus Statement. He is a member the European Atherosclerosis Society and the World Heart Federation, and on the Steering Committee developing a worldwide registry of homozygous and heterozygous FH subjects. He is a board member of the International Atherosclerosis Society; and serves on the Editorial Board of Atherosclerosis. Over the last eight years, he has published 119 peer-reviewed articles and seven book chapters and delivered 31 keynote addresses.
