Professor Gerald Nurick’s research into the field of impact, blast events and structural failure seeks to discover ways in which to increase the survivability of structures and humans protected by the structures. He completed his Honours and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering at the then University of Natal (now UKZN) and his PhD at the University of Cape Town where he currently holds a Professorship. Since 2013, he has produced numerous conference outputs; published/co-published 27 peer-reviewed articles in, among others, Engineering Fracture Mechanics and Mechanics and Materials. He served on the editorial boards of journals such as the International Journal of Impact Engineering and the International Journal of Protective Structures. He has also extensively lectured internationally, including presenting the Bill Johnson Memorial Lecture at IMPLAST 2016 in India. Professor Nurick was one of the inaugural group of five elected as Honorary Members of ISIE for lifetime significant contributions to and the development and growth of Impact Engineering activities. He has supervised over 70 postdoctoral, Doctoral and Master’s students over his career.
