Professor Lenore Manderson’s work focuses on the intersections of health, inequality and structural divides. After completing her PhD in Asian Studies at the Australian National University, she held various academic positions in Australia, including Professor of Tropical Health at the University of Queensland; Professor of Women’s Health at the University of Melbourne; and Professor of Medical Anthropology at Monash. She is currently a Distinguished Professor of Public Health and Medical Anthropology in the School of Public Health at the University of the Witwatersrand. She has authored and co-authored more than 90 articles in journals such as Frontiers in Psychology and Medical Anthropology, more than 35 book chapters, and authored and edited seven scholarly books. Prof Manderson has made major contributions to global policy through her work with the WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases and served on numerous advisory committees for the World Bank, UNAIDS, and UNICEF. She was an inaugural Federation Fellow in Australia, and has garnered many awards including the Society for Medical Anthropology’s Mentor Award and Career Achievement Award.
