Professor Nigel C Bennett’s research focus is ecology, animal physiology and behaviour using the African mole-rat as his model animal. Prof Bennett obtained his Honours degree from the University of Bristol. After completing his PhD at the University of Cape Town, he worked as a Senior Researcher in Zoology at UCT before moving to UP as a Senior Lecturer. He held the DSI-NRF Research Chair in Mammalian Behavioural Ecology and Physiology and currently holds the UP Austin Roberts Chair of African Mammalogy. He was a Visiting Professor at universities at the University of London and at King Saud University. Among his various accolades is the UP Chancellor’s Medal and the prestigious JFW Herschel Medal from the Royal Society of South Africa. In 2021 he was made an honorary member of the American Society of Mammalogists. Prof Bennett has published 460 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, co-authored a specialist book and fifteen chapters in books. He edited Proceedings of the Royal Society of London Biological Sciences B and is currently Reviews Editor for the Journal of Zoology.
