1st A-Rating Professor Timothy Egan Department of ChemistryUniversity of Cape Town Professor Timothy Egan made significant contributions to combatting malaria. Specifically, he improved our understanding of hemozoin formation in malarial parasites. Hemozoin is an important target of anti-malarial drug design. He joined UCT as a lecturer and held numerous leadership positions. In 2010, he received the title of Jamison Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and in 2018 he was appointed Head of Department of Chemistry – he held both positions up until his passing in May 2022. He was recognised in his field. He was awarded a Fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science; the Gold Medal of the South African Chemical Institute; and was elected a SACI Fellow in 2019. He was also a reviewer for more than 50 journals, including Nature Communications and PNAS. His first paper, published in 1994, is the second most cited paper on malaria emanating from South Africa within the fields of biochemistry, chemistry and biophysics. Over the course of his career, he published 129 papers, resulting in 4 716 citations.
