Professor Gavin ChurchyardThe Aurum Institute Professor Gavin Churchyard is a specialist physician focusing on tuberculosis and HIV as well as COVID-19. As the founder and Group CEO of the Aurum Institute NPC, he oversees research, service delivery and technical assistance in South Africa and a number of other countries. He led the Adult Clinical Trials Group TB Transformative Science Group of the US National Institute Health Division of AIDS and contributed to WHO policy and guidelines. Prof Churchyard completed his MBBCh, Master’s in Internal Medicine and PhD in Infectious Diseases at the University of the Witwatersrand and is a Fellow of the College of Physicians in South Africa and the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. He completed his internship at Johannesburg General Hospital and worked as a Medical Officer, Resident and Consultant at several medical facilities around the country. He has published 300 peer-reviewed articles over his career in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and Nature Medicine as well as 12 book chapters. Over the past eight years he has supervised 29 students including three PhDs.
