Professor Rachel Jewkes

Prof Rachel Jewkes has conducted ground-breaking research on the intersections of GBV and HIV, on rape and rape perpetration and on GBV prevention. She completed her Master’s and MD degrees at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is the Executive Scientist in the Office of the President of the SAMRC; an Honorary Professor at the University of Witwatersrand; and served on the Executive Management Committee of the SAMRC. She co-founded the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) and is a long-standing member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Injury and Violence Prevention and Control. She led the technical team of the UN Multi-country Study on Men and Violence in Asia and the Pacific and has worked closely with the South African Government on sexual violence and health policies. She has published 316 peer-reviewed journal articles, 44 technical reports, 33 book chapters, developed 19 GBV prevention intervention manuals and is an international advisory board member for The Lancet and The Lancet Public Health and on the editorial board of PLoS Medicine and Archives of Women’s Medical Health among others. She has supervised 15 PhD students. In 2014, she was awarded a Gold Medal by the SAMRC.
