Professor George JanelidzeDepartment of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, University of Cape Town Currently a Professor in the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics department at the University of Cape Town, Professor George Janelidze’s research has focused on areas of Category Theory, Algebra, and Topology. He obtained his MSc and PhD in Mathematics from Tbilisi State University in Georgia, and DSc from Petersburg State University in Russia. One of his major achievements was to develop a category-theoretic version of classical Galois Theory with many new applications, especially in universal, homological, and commutative algebra, and in algebraic and general topology. Previously working at the Tbilisi Mathematics Institute he was invited as a Visiting Professor to a number of universities in Europe, North America, and Australia. He is a Member of the Georgian and the South African Academies of Science, elected in 2013 and 2020, respectively. He has published more than a hundred peer-reviewed articles in international mathematical journals.
