Professor Edward Sturrock

Department of Integrative Biomedical Sciences University of Cape Town

Prof Edward Sturrock’s research interests include structurefunction aspects of the angiotensinconverting enzyme (ACE); structure-based design of novel ACE and vasopeptidase inhibitors, and the mechanisms involved in fibrosing TB pericarditis. He has been associated with the University of Cape Town (UCT) for most of his career where he is currently a Full Professor. After completing his PhD at UCT he took a postdoctoral Fellowship at Harvard Medical School where he started his research on ACE, a protein that plays a key role in blood pressure regulation. In 2003 he was awarded a Wellcome Trust International Senior Research Fellowship for his work on the development of new domain-selective inhibitors of ACE. After this, his research focus shifted toward the design of novel ACE inhibitors that are likely to be more effective for the treatment of hypertension. He has made significant contributions to the national and international scientific communities. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of South Africa; a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa; and served on the council of the International Proteolysis Society. To date, he has published 129 papers in peerreviewed international journals and filed six patents (four of which have been granted in five regions).
